What operating system(s) are you using to try accessing the data. If you have only used the flash drive on Windows, there is a chance that you may be able to get the data using a Mac, or a computer running Linux, instead of Windows. I have had success with a flash drive that seemed corrupted on WindowsXP and Windows 7, by using a PC operating on Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a free Linux operating system. You can download it, burn it to cd or dvd, and run it on your computer in place of Windows or Mac OS, without disrupting your currently installed operating system or anything on your pc. In other words, you can use it without installing it on your pc, but instead by running it right from the cd/dvd, and not affect anything you already have. Conversely, if the flash drive has only been used on Macs, it would be worth trying it on a Windows pc, although it is a long shot.

Here's the Ubuntu download page link if you'd like to look into that option.

And here are simple instructions on burning the Ubuntu download to cd/dvd, if you are unfamiliar with the process.

i tried using my ubuntu disc but it didn't want to load.
i finally insisted my son take it to a local computer tech who will only charge me if the data is retrieved. did that after calling the maker of the drive and they told me that it's probably a functional problem but the memory part might still contain the data. we'll see. meh.

Two years back I had the same issue with a Lexar flash drive (512MB). After speaking to their support, I sent the drive, got the data retrieved and copied on a brand new flash drive (2GB), shipped for free.

My flash drive did the same thing. The usb port was bad on my computer. Has he taken the drive to school and tried it on their computer? If it does not work on a second computer then the flash itself has probably corrupted. In this case there is no way that I know of to recover the info.

Sorry for the news,
Jennifer

What does a source link about Autism have to do with a computer technical problem?

@chriswingate Clearly @jenniferterry is spamming Mahalo... I suggest everyone reports her answers which include that "source" since it has no purpose to the answers she is giving. The more people that report the quicker Mahalo Staff will notice her behavior.

I don't see any mention of Autism in her post here. In fact, it seems Jennifer is trying to be very helpful on a number of pages.
Being that she is new to Mahalo, I am guessing that (from looking at some of her answers) she accidentally pasted the same URL in the Source field of some pages she posted answers to. I'm willing to bet it's just a simple mistake from someone new to Mahalo.

@waulok the reason you don't see anything about Autism in this post is because Mahalo staff is going through @jenniferterry's post and removing the spam link which is in the source. It clearly wasn't an "accidentally" pasting of the same URL since it was in ALL of her answers...

As a new member she likely didn't realize that doing so would be noticed as spam from the community. Reporting the issue as spam gives the Mahalo staff a chance to see the problem... remove the problem... and talk with the user about their actions.
