Depends on your budget. I've had very good luck with my corolla (160k miles), though it does burn a little oil, it just keeps going. The Scion XA/XB are both based on yaris (which was originally the toyota echo), and my wife drives an 08 Xb which drives nice. The echo has a little rougher ride to be honest. It is ironic that the more expensive camry usually has issues (father-in-law had engine problems at 80k miles, took his mechanic forever to figure it out, ended up being a faulty sensor that was giving false check engine readings). It's as if in toyota's mind, if you can afford a camry, you can deal with some problems. if your buying a cheap car, you need it to be reliable first and foremost. My only issue with the corolla is that it's gone from a decent, small, affordable car into something that's out of my price-range now ($16k for 2009, I paid $14k out the door for my 02). Honestly, there's only like a $1k price difference between the corolla and camry now. Also keep in mind about the yaris, it's basically an imported Vitz from europe, so it has more experience than you might think. I'm seriously considering one myself to replace the corolla, it's small, economical, and honestly has as much legroom as the corolla.

However you asked if there may be a better used car and I have been very pleased with Nissan. You have a similar predicament with Nissan when comparing the Versa to the Sentra and the argument is pretty much the same. I had a 2001 Sentra with 180k miles that I would still be driving today if I hadn't gotten rear ended. I plan to replace it with a newer Sentra based on how few problems I had with mine even at such high mileage.

Resale is also some thing I considered. If you go with the Corolla, Camry etc, that model name will still be current when you go to sell it years down the road. Think of a pasaio, or more presently an echo. Do some shopping. you will find that dead end models don't hold their value quite as well. This also affects after market items available for a car as well.
Both great cars but the Yaris seams a bit more entry level to me and the price and fuel economy don't seem to be enough to go with the smaller car.
I found a Corolla s (sport) model. A bit nicer appearance with the spoiler and stuff. Cheers! Here is a comparison on the two. http://www.truedelta.com/comparisons201/Corolla-vs-Yaris-price-comparison.php?session_code=&aff=
P.s Mazda 3 is agreat car in the price range as well.

To be honest we finally decided on a used Honda Civic Hybrid and I am now a true believer in that car. I have a long commute and my used Civic Hybrid has piled on the miles without complaining and gets 40mpg highway and even better city and highway if you drive it carefully. Our record is over 50mpg. Not a single problem in a year and a half and 30,000+ miles.

Should we buy a Toyota Yaris or Corolla?
My wife and I are in the market to replace her old '93 Camry for something that doesn't break down as much. We've narrowed it down to the tiny Toyota sedans because of reliability and the fact that we can probably get well over 100,000 miles on them for a rather cheap price. The only problem is, is that they're pretty much the same car. The Yaris has a tiny bit better gas milage, and is cuter, but the Corolla has a tiny bit more space. Am I missing some other information? Also, Is there a particular year of Yaris or Corolla that is better than the others? Or do you think there is a better used car with 20k or so miles for around 9-10K that we should look into?

Out of those two I would buy the Corolla, especially given that they are near the same price. While the Yaris gets slightly better gas mileage, the Corolla is a much more comfortable car and it has a long heritage of dependability. I would also go with the Corolla since it is a bit more upscale compared to the Yaris. I think you would be more happy with it in the long run.

The Toyota Corolla as I have seen these cars withstand quite a bit. A friend of mine has a 1982 corolla with over 200,000 miles and it still runs well.

Pick the Corolla, I did. Here are the determining factors for me. I bought a new Corolla on Friday. In my market at least, the price difference was not that much (new or slightly used) between the Corolla, and Yaris. Position the front seat for yourself to drive, then sit in the back, factor in leg room, head room. You will notice quite a difference. Now if you factor in cargo space then the choice is clear. Resale is also some thing I considered. If you go with the Corolla, Camry etc, that model name will still be current when you go to sell it years down the road. Think of a pasaio, or more presently an echo. Do some shopping. you will find that dead end models don't hold their value quite as well. Hmm, I really think you should consider the Honda Fit. My wife and I were looking very closely at the Yaris and other small high mileage cars. The test drives clearly gave the edge to the Fit in my opinion. I found the Fit to be a bit larger and drove better as well. The gas mileage was virtually the same as was the price. Edmunds.com has a great quote...
"Now in its tenth generation, the compact Toyota Corolla is the best-selling nameplate in automotive history. And with good reason: This is the quintessential economy car. It's small, inexpensive, fuel-efficient and reliable. Put gas in it, give it the occasional oil change and it will provide dependable transportation well past the 100,000-mile mark. That's why more than 200,000 Americans, from high schoolers to retirees, buy Corollas every year."
