He worked for Hanna-Barbera as an animator and was one of the writer's for the Cartoon Cartoon series on Cartoon Network as well as working on the hit series Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, and Dexter's Laboratory.
In 1996, McFarlane created Larry and Steve, a sequel to his series The Life of Larry, which the characters included an intelligent dog named Steve and a middle-aged man named Steve.
The short was part of CN's World Premire Toons and Fox execs saw the short and liked it, and contracted McFarlane to create what was to be called Family Guy.
