The Federal Republic of Germany, commonly referred to as West Germany, was formed in May 1949 until the Berlin Wall was broken down and Germany was reunification in the fall of 1990. According to Wikipedia, it was determined in 1974, that a label reading "Made in Germany" did not enable people to distinguish between the two Germanys of the time, so the labels "Made in West Germany" and "Made in GDR" were established and continued until the reunification in 1990. This is helpful regarding the 1974 court decision. But I still am hoping for more detailed information, such as whether the W-Germany and Western Germany preceded the West Germany. Perhaps West Germany replaced those other abbreviations after 1974? I can't read the German books even if I find them.
