Is there something I can do to prevent coffee from staining my teeth? Aside from professional whitening?

I have one mug in the morning, and while I'm not unusually preoccupied with my looks I want to avoid the teeth staining that I see in older coffee drinkers. I recently saw my father, a high consumer of coffee but a non-smoker, and was shocked at how terrible his teeth look and would like to avoid the same fate.

There isn't much you can do to prevent them, but you CAN remove them. I noticed someone mentioned at home whitening. Yes, they work, but they are expensive and temporary. Instead, get a bottle of hydrogen peroxide from the pharmacy (about $1 for a large bottle) and a box of baking soda from the grocery store (also about $1). Use a little of each on your toothbrush each night. Baking soda does NOT taste good, so I also dip my brush in peroxide, then baking soda (not too much) then toothpaste over top to mask the taste. It tastes a little like soap but you'll get used to it fast and it leaves your mouth feeling SUPER clean. It'll remove all the surface stains that coffee leaves, but it's not so harsh that it'll make your teeth jumpy and sensitive and damage the enamel. It's a very gentle cleaner, and it does work well. If you can handle the taste, you can also make a peroxide and baking soda paste and use it just like toothpaste, but I personally still need the toothpaste to mask the soapy taste.
Plus just 2 dollars will last you MONTHS where are whitening strips will last you only a few weeks for 40 dollars or so, and they'll leave your mouth very sensitive.

Good luck!

Drink it cold and use a straw...or avoid coffee completely! Because it WILL stain your teefs!

What's wrong with Whitening products? They do work! If you have dental coverage go get bleachings done.

Will do.

I guess my answer was acerbically brief.

What I really intended to say was:
Coffee never stained my teeth, or the teeth of anyone I've ever know. I don't think this is a real problem and I don't know of anyone who ever suffered from or complained about it. Some residents of a particular country think that if their teeth aren't paper white that they have a problem. They think that they must bleach their teeth as if any colour other than white is somehow disgusting or unsightly and the fact is that teeth are a pale yellow or beige colour. So they bleach their teeth white and they look absolutely ridiculous. Like fake boobs or a fake tan, it just looks fake and silly.

So do yourself a favor and stop worrying about it.

If you're having problems with your dental hygiene, it's probably not due to drinking coffee. You probably need to brush your teeth better and more often.

A lot of people say Oil Pulling works. I've used it, and it DOES work. Matter of fact this question has reminded me I really need to do it again!

Because our teeth have a porous surface, you really are not going to be able to avoid stains. Try brushing your teeth after each drink. Also, have you tried using the at-home whitening treatments? They have come a long way, and are more budget friendly than some of the professional treatments.

Good luck :)
