An EXCELLENT source (believe it or not and too often overlooked) is the County Extension Service. Every state has one. They're out to promote the LATEST research-based gardening/farming methods. Check your state's agricultural college and you'll find they're very eager to please and promote their services. They may even have a Master Gardener organization in your county.

Our County Extension Office when I grew up would provide cheap tree seedlings to make wind breaks, soil samples, and would plan drainage and erosion control projects. Also contact your Farm Bureau office. In addition to insurance they offer a lot of education efforts for agricultural interests.
