State the case for global warming in one paragraph.

OK, so one of your friends says that there is nothing to worry about and global warming is a myth. Please give a one paragraph (as short as possible while still stating your points) answer with as many hard facts (sources) as necessary.

Observations at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii have shown a drastic rise in atmospheric CO2 concentrations over the last 50 years. The Vostock Ice Cores show a strong correlation between atmospheric CO2 and global temperatures over the past 300,000 years. Climate models can replicate the increase in average surface temperatures over the last 100 years by including anthropogenic forcing, but are otherwise flat. The simplest, most rational explanation for these three observations would be that human-induced CO2 emmissions have caused an increase in Earth's temperature. All three of these studies have been replicated multiple times with the same results, you can see all three charts together at the weather underground blog. Because of that and other evidence, the UN set up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to further study climate change in 1988. The four IPCC reports produced since then have confirmed and found further evidence of continued global warming.

Earth has warmed by about 1ºF over the past 100 years, which is known as Global Warming. Scientists have determined that a number of human activities are contributing to global warming by adding excessive amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide accumulated in the atmosphere and trap heat that normally would exit into outer space. Yet many people believe and or deny that humans are to blame.

Hi, and sorry for not commenting sooner.
I like many of the answers so far, but I would like to see some sources for the facts. I think without credible sources for the information, doubters will still doubt.

the effect of global warming is that we're going to live for 10 years of having clean environment, so if we're already buying mineral.distilled water, maybe the are sooner than we think

The main Cause for Global Warming are the Green House Gases such as Carbon Dioxide,Methane,Nitrous Oxide, etc. Methane is more than 20 times as effectual as CO2 at entrapping heat in the atmosphere.Methane is obtained from resources such as rice paddies, bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs and fossil fuel manufacture.Another cause of global warming is deforestation that is caused by cutting and burning of forests for the purpose of residence and industrialization.

The main causes of global warming are from Carbon Dioxide caused by A) Driving cars, B) Electricity from power plants, C) Heating homes with oil or gas, D) Deforestation and Methane caused by A) Raising cattle and B) Growing rice. Together Carbon Dioxide and Methane heat the earth up, causing a greenhouse gas effect.

If you read Albert Einstein's work on general and special relativity, which includes an explanation of gravity, you will find that he had calculated the Earth's rotation around the sun. This rotation was found to be elliptical, not circular. Because of this, the Earth is bound to have periods of warmer weather and periods of cooler weather, as evidenced by the dark and light layers of rock on in many cut mountains. When you combine a warm cycle with abnormally high greenhouse gas emission (water vapor, CO2, NO, Methane, Ozone, CFC) relative to what the Earth is able to sustain on its own at that time, you will get an average rise in temperature on Earth.

Global warming is not a myth but it's a cycle. The human population is speeding up the current cycle with its mindless modern life style, industrialization, livestock, deforestation, etc. and the chain reaction of all these factors. As your friend says our generation may not worry about this, but the future generations will have serious consequences if we don't act now.

Along with the globalization of everything - from economy - to pandemic diseases, we also have global warming. With new economic powers like China and India, there is an exponential impact on the global weather patterns.

So every country need to act with seriousness to stop/slow down the change.
Per this site, I think we are in the right direction.

The rapid, human-caused increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide is a threat in and of itself, regardless of whether the resulting greenhouse heating is offset by other feedback mechanisms. According to chaos theory, a small change made to a system's initial equilibrium conditions can lead to large and unpredictable changes, finally resulting in a new equilibrium which may or may not be the same as the original. The increase in atmospheric CO2 over the past 50 years (from 316 to 385 ppmv, or 22%) is a significant change, and at some point it may trigger an extreme and unexpected response, possibly in the form of a runaway feedback mechanism. We know that sudden climate changes have occurred in the past for no apparent reason, and it is possible that they were the result of relatively small environmental changes that triggered chaotic responses and resulted in totally new climatic equilibria. Since most of our modern infrastructure was planned and built based on the climate of the mid-20th century, any climatic changes in any direction are likely to have negative effects somewhere which will have to be addressed (and paid for). In the long run, doing nothing about climate change is not a money-saving option.
