It doesn't *have* to be distilled, but it's much better for your iron and your clothes to use distilled water.
Distilled water is water with most of the impurities out of it. If you use non-distilled water you will wind up leaving mineral deposits in your iron (and potentially clogging the steam holes) and potentially on your clothes.
If you do do this, or acquire an iron where someone has been frequently using tap water, etc. a good way to get rid of such mineral deposits is with vinegar.
But, in a pinch if you *need* to iron something and you don't have any distilled water, nor time to get some, then go ahead and use tap water.. it shouldn't hurt to use it occasionally.

It depends on the iron. I think most nowadays work fine with tapwater. e.g. This one:
