Can I recycle my Brita filter?

Can I recycle my Brita filter? I feel guilty throwing them away every few months. Does anyone know where I can recycle them or if I can just throw them in my bin with my plastic containers?

Starting 12 January 2009, Brita has recycling program. I guess they understand concern from good consumers like @danielle
http://www.brita.com/us/support/filter-recycling/

From the above website, there are two ways to participate:
Option 1
Recycle Brita pitcher filters at participating Preserve Gimme 5 locations. Here’s how:
1. Dry the filter by shaking off excess water and setting it in a dry place for at least three days.
2. Wrap the filter in a plastic grocery bag, which will be recycled at the Preserve Gimme 5 destination.
3. Find a drop-off location. Drop the wrapped filter in the Preserve Gimme 5 bin.

Option 2
If there isn’t a drop-off location nearby, simply mail filters to Preserve:
1. Dry the filter by shaking off excess water and setting it in a dry place for at least three days.
2. Wrap the filter in a plastic grocery bag, then pack it in a box. (Boxes and bags will be recycled.) If possible, send multiple filters at a time.
3. Mail filters via ground shipping to: Preserve Gimme 5, 823 NYS Rte 13, Cortland, NY 13045

Second life for old Brita filters
-- quote --
Preserve will recycle each collected Brita plastic pitcher filter casing into Preserve’s eco-friendly, 100 percent recycled products such as toothbrushes, cups and cutting boards. All Preserve plastic products are also recyclable, giving Brita® filter materials a third life. The filter ingredients—activated carbon for creating great-tasting water and ion exchange resin that reduces lead, mercury, copper, cadmium and zinc that might be found in tap water - will be regenerated for alternative use or converted into energy. Preserve has calculated that the benefits of keeping Brita filters out of landfills and making them into Preserve products outweigh the impact of shipping them for recycling through this program.

And since you already answered the key point.. I figure the other part of the question needs to be answered:

"Can I just throw them in the bin with my other plastic containers?"

The answer would in most cases be no.

For one thing, a brita filter is not entirely plastic, but contains a number of other materials. Another reason is that at this point in time most municipal plastics recycling programs only take #1 & #2 bottle plastics. There are some places and municipalities that take other plastics, but they are not the norm. Usually this depends upon the capabilities of the recycling facility that sorts your communities recycling.
