According to Treehugger.com, the key to looking for a green detergent is to find one free of phospsphates. Phosphates are harmful to groundwater once they leave your washer. The website goes on to recommend Ecover, Seventh Generation's Free and Clear (for sensitive skin) or the wildly available Arm and Hammer dye and fragrance free detergents.

Best eco-friendly laundry detergent?
Right now I use All Free Clear because it has no scent and doesn't bother my skin, but I worry that it has too many chemicals in it. On the other hand, I'm suspicious that "green" detergent can really get my clothes clean. Opinions?

• Thanks for giving me some choices and explaining about phosphates. I might give the Arm and Hammer brand a try.

No liquid detergents in the US have Phosphates in them. Keep using all Free Clear. Green detergents have the same amount of chemicals, just they are typically from renewable resources and may not clean as good as historical surfactants. Seventh Generation is one of the better Eco products. Arm & Hammer is the same technology as all Free Clear.
