You might be thiking of Boethius' "Consolation of Philosophy." He lived around 480 AD, which makes it Late Roman Empire, rather than The Middle Ages, but in many ways, the Late Roman Empire felt a lot like the middle ages (e.g. inroads of "barbarian" tribes into formerly Roman areas). Luckily, since the work is public domain, the entire work is available here:

i am trying to find the name of a book written by a monk during the middle ages while in prison. i think it might be poetry.
it is a relatively well know book.

George Ashby was an imprisoned monk poet from the middle ages. He wrote "Complaint of a prisoner in the fleet 1463" and "A prisoner's reflections"
