Cincinnati Bengals Chad Ochocinco fined $5000 for wearing Orange chinstrap. Fair or not?
He was seemingly showing team pride by wearing an orange chinstrap during a preseason game... but he had to pay a $5,000 fine for unwittingly violated:
Rule 5, Section 4, Article 3(a) specifies that all players must wear a "Helmet with chin strap (white only) fastened and face mask attached."
Ochocinco took to his twitter account, saying:
"WTF I got a damn fine already, it's the damn preseason, this is some b-------!!!!"
"Im sueing sic the NFL," he wrote at about 1:45 p.m. ET, "I am color blind so this fine is discriminating because I'm disabled in a way, this is a sad day for me:("
What do you think of this fine? Fair or not?

it's a stupid fine. who is the guy who noticed and got all excited about issuing the fine? Who gets the money from the fine?
Athletes and celebrities get away with so much crap, but there's no denying he did break a rule. Just suck it up & pay up, "Ochocinco".
I love how he argues he's going to sue for being colorblind. Seriously, can anyone prove he was making that up? How would he get an orange one anyway, aren't uniforms standard issue? Sorry i'm asking more questions in the answer than were in the original question!

Rules are rules even if they may seam to be unfair you should know what you can do from what you aren't suppose to do. I think the $5000 might be way excessive but if the rules clearly state white chin strap and you wore orange you are clearly breaking the rules. If you are ignorant of the law that does not allow you to break it and get away. The fine is a fair one the amount might be to harsh but if it is relative to the fine fair also.

The fine is justified. If the rulebook states that the chinstrap must be white, then he's violating the rules. He's a big baby to complain about a $5,000 fine. For these high paid athletes, $5,000 is like me throwing someone a 5 dollar bill.

Hey, the rule may not seem to make a whole lot of sense to me or you, but if the league didn't fine players for violating guidelines of league dress and behavior, then what would stop all of the divas on the football field from dressing how they want, doing what they want.
They each make a dumptruck full of money each year (I believe they actually have one drive up to their house and dump!), and the only requirements are to play in a handful of games, and follow the rules. That's it.
And if the fine seems too high - think again about that dumptruck. $5,000 shimmies out of it when it goes over a speedbump. Any lesser fine and the players wouldn't pay any attention. It's be like my mom saying to me as a kid: "You don't want to clean your room? Fine, no vegetables for you with dinner!"

If he's truly colorblind, then he should take up his issue with team managers who should be notified of any disabilities, and should be monitoring the dress of their players.
I know workers in all types of field that get screwed by management all the time, and most of them lose a lot more than $5,000 because of it - and they actually NEED that money. So if Ochocinco wants to cry into his gold-plated handkerchief over this, I'm not going to up losing sleep while he does it.

Has anyone researched why they have the rule? I tried but it wasn't anywhere obvious and I don't care enough about football to try harder. But I'm quite willing to guess that there actually is a good reason. The chin strap is a safety device. If there were no rule players might use all colors, including those that don't stand out well. Probably they decided white was the most visible and wouldn't conflict with any of the uniforms.
So, I think the player could be in the wrong. Of course, I despise the league too, so likely as not they didn't have any reason for the rule and are just being their obnoxious selves.
Everyone should be boycotting the league anyway until they get rid of that dog killer.

He is just annoying. Since there's no NFL rule against being annoying, they should use all the ticky-tacky rules to get at him.
Regardless of how much players make, a $5000 fine is just high enough to cross the line in my opinion. It's not just about what the money means to the player (probably not much), but what the amount means to the public. It would have been much more effective and much less insulting to fine him $1, and that's what they should have done.
Yes, it is fair that Chad Ochocinco was fined because the NFL does have set regulations, as stated above, on the color of players chinstraps, therefore they have the right to fine Chad. Chad Ochocinco has broken enough NFL policies to know that he should check the rulebook before changing any piece of his uniform. That is not to say that I believe Chad broke the regulation so blatently that he deserved to be fined for it, but he should just take it and move on. $5000 is pocket change for Chad, there shouldnt be a big deal made of this at all.

Someone blogged about the very question you just asked:
"players often say you could write a book on all the things they can be fined for. I think there's plenty of truth to that... By the way, I wonder who actually has the job of determining who dressed properly for NFL games. That has to be one of the worst jobs in the world."

OH WAIT!! I KNOW THIS ONE!!! it's either Mr. Willis or Miss Purpura! Remember how in gym class, if you weren't in uniform, you had to do pushups and you lost points for the day? I swear they lived for that crap. :-P
