Funny you should ask that, we actually did that one year for our tree. What we did was get a bunch of records and hung them in the tree. My mom made little girls in red and green skirts with a reindeer on them (instead of a poodle) and we had little milkshakes and jukeboxes hanging all over the tree. My mom tossed some Grease decorations in the tree too but we called it our Sock Hop Tree it was awesome and all the little kids in the family went crazy and the adults thought it was pretty cool too. I know my aunt and uncle did it the next year so it's a small flowing tradition in the family now. This year we are thinking of doing a "Hippie" tree...have to think it out though...

That's a cool idea. I like themed trees, and every year it has kind of become a contest in our family: my grandma, mom, and me all have a different theme for our trees. Last year, I made a '90s retro tree with hot pink and lime green on a snow-frosted tree, as opposed to red and green and the more traditional decorations. Thanks for the Sock Hop Tree idea, and the hippie tree idea is cool too--there are a lot of neat ways you can carry that out.

Of course, the ultimate retro tree is a metal tree with the light machine that changes its colors.

Having grown up in the 50's and 60's, it seemed that everyone had those fancy glass ornaments that were teardrop shaped, or had pointed ends. Some had little recessed designs on the sides. Garlands weren't popular, unless they were cranberries or popcorn. Most trees had tinsel. Candy canes hung on trees were essential, and large bulbed lights. I think they call them "classic" lights now, but they aren't the minis.

Usually a star on top of the tree, but always something simple, nothing really huge or gaudy.

Colors were traditional; red, green, white and gold...no silver or blue or purple. Those bird ornaments made with real feathers are traditional in the south, but don't know about the rest of the country.

Basically, tree decorations were simpler and in traditional colors.

See, that's kind of what I am looking for. I want one of those metal trees with the light machine, and last year I looked into that. Those old trees are so expensive on Ebay!! I was going to wait until the season was over, then try to find one when there wasn't as much interest, but I keep forgetting. The only thing I don't like about them though, is you can't really decorate them. Maybe I will try to find a more modern metal tree--one that has no antique value and can be more purposeful. We still hang candy canes on our tree every year--a family tradition, I guess, and we also still have quite a few of those glass bulbs and teardrop-shaped ornaments, as well as the birds, but they don't preserve well--after a while, the feathers become a mess, and it is basically unrecognizable as a bird. Thanks!

Bubble Lights on a fake white tree with liberal use of silver accents has been a great inexpensive way to create a retro feeling during the holidays.

Actually,I believe the best way to get a RETRO tree is by going onto eBay and actually buying RETRO items.

You can find super cheap stuff from the 60s and 70s on there.I myself have inherited old tree balls and light strings from my grandmother. They are so pretty.
Here are a few for you to check out.
