How did god know that Adam wouldn't be able to find a helper among the animals? God gave Adam free will (hence the whole apple debacle). God didn't know what Adam would do because He's given us all free will...

The way I understand the passage that describes the naming of the animals, is that God had Adam name them and helped him when he named them, so that Adam could see a need (animals were both the male and female forms) and understand that he was not like the animals. Adam was able to realize that he was all alone and needed a partner with which to communicate. This exercise allowed Adam to understand that he was not like the animals and that he needed a helper that was more like him. The passage also points to the fact that God made numerous animals, but only one man and one woman.
