The Gobots were released 5 months before the Transformers hit the store shelves. Transformers may have been more successful in the long run but Gobots were first. In September of 1984 both the Transformers and Gobots would get their own animated television shows.

The bloodline of the Transformers:
Diaclone was a toyline by Takara Toys launched in 1980. It consisted of transforming vehicles and robots.
In 1982, the line later featured the Car-Robots set of transforming robot toys.
In 1984, Hasbro licensed the Car-Robots toyline along with the Microman "Micro Change" toyline from Takara and merged the two series of toys to create the Transformers.
The bloodline of the Gobots:
Machine Robo is a Japanese transforming robot toyline first released in 1982 by Popy, a division of Bandai, then later by Bandai proper.
A large portion of these toys were exported to North America as part of Tonka's Gobots and Rock Lords series, beginning in 1984.

It appears as though the forefathers of the Transformers pre-dates those of the Gobots. The bloodline of the Transformers:

In 1982, the line later featured the Car-Robots set of transforming robot toys.
In 1984, Hasbro licensed the Car-Robots toyline along with the Microman "Micro Change" toyline from Takara and merged the two series of toys to create the Transformers.
The bloodline of the Gobots:

I watched both as a kids, and I think Gobots ripped off Transformers. Below is a good article on the two.
