For the past 6 months, the local PBS channels have been replaying the same 8 Sesame Street episodes on a daily rotation. Why?

Looking for insight into the world of tv programming and PBS broadcasting decisions. Why is it that out of all of the MANY seasons Sesame Street has been on the air, I watch the same 8 episodes over and over for months?

It's like this one more than one local PBS broadcasting channel.

Most of the information I have been able to find is general and repetitious and does not tell me exactly what you are asking about. But, there are lots of clues and it probably has to do with the finances of your PBS station.

Wikipedia and others say in part "Unlike the model of America's commercial television networks, in which affiliates give up portions of their local advertising airtime in exchange for network programming, PBS member stations pay substantial fees for the shows acquired and distributed by the national organization.
This relationship means that PBS member stations have greater latitude in local scheduling than their commercial counterparts."

So your local tv station is paying a bundle for the right to broadcast Sesame Street. I have also found that the usual package of syndicated children's shows is 65 episodes, 8 is a lot less than that. But, maybe your station bought the rights to an eight show package and is trying to make it last. Maybe they are even getting by with a free sample or such like.
If you call your local station someone there might be able and willing to explain, especially since it would be a good excuse for them to ask for a generous donation.

I think we will see more support for Public TV during this administration and by this congress. I am sure I read that the First Lady is a Sesame Street fan.

Sesame Street is celebrating their 40th Anniversary this week.
Google is even excited about it which is easily shown by visiting http://google.com and looking at the daily doodle. Image attached.

This week marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street , first broadcast on PBS on November 10, 1969. It's provided us with lots of great memories and some superlative rock and roll moments. Here are just five.

That it is the show's 40th anniversary can scarcely have anything to do with explaining the pattern of reruns that the asker is complaining about.

You are 100% correct @albanian. I figured it was not a complaint but rather a query as to why re-runs were showing up. The 40th anniversary is giving PBS the opportunity to show re-runs while we hope they are preparing a new episode for Tuesday November, 10, 2009.

But the same 8 reruns? Why just 8 shows? Why not rerun a bunch of shows? Thats like having a pantry full of food and only serving your family noodles for a month.

Obviously Big Bird is making great royalties off of these episodes and has made contract demands to have them played over and over until he is the only thought left in the minds of children and the adults who have already been subjected to these episodes.

Sorry, lol I had to.
