Does our current society view the Chihuahua as a dog, or accessory?

With the popularity of this breed, people tend to forget that a dog is a dog and should be treated as such.

I've had 3 neighbors who have had chihuahuas and they each got rid of them after they got sick of them. Its not right, but they are treated as accessories.

Often this is the case with in fact any breed of dog - after the cute 'puppy' grows up and becomes a dog or becomes too much to handle (because the animal was in fact never given any dog obedience training or social outlets to learn how to become a good pet and dog).

Sadly, many dogs (and other pets) are commodities for many people and are surrendered to shelters every hour of every day.

If you are someone who feels that a dog is a long term family commitment - and you are looking for a new dog - try a breed rescue or a shelter and consider learning more about how to adopt a dog - so many pure bred dogs and wonderful mixed breeds are waiting for you. Not sure what kind? Check out How to chose a dog breed for some helpful tips.

Unfortunately, people do tend to see the Chihuahua as well as many other breeds an accessory. A lady I talked to one day told be that her dog was just a "play pretty". Pets have become a way for people to get attention, whether it is just to try to get a date or encourage conversation. Some go with fads and adopt a popular breed as a form of status and to be "in". While these people do often love their pets, it is really about them.

On the flip side, some people want companionship, and a dog is one of the very best friends a person could have.

As long as the animal is being cared for and no harm comes, I think that either way a pet is viewed is alright. And, yes many probably do view the Chihuahua as an accessory, the cute little buggers!

I can only hope that someday people will see that these little dogs make great companions without having to ride your purse.

Without a doubt, accessories. Somewhere between purses and dollies. I have heard people talk about having a chi "to carry around with them." The qualities that are desired are 1) smallest size possible and 2) cute. No dog-like characteristics (protective bark, herding characteristics, ability to be trained to a high level) need apply!
The ones that I have seen have owners that seem to want to dress them up, accessorize them, and carry fashionable handbags with the Chi's cute little head poking out. In one case, cute little fabric roses were crazy glued onto the top of the dog's head, presumably so all would know the animal was a girl. If there's any jaundice in this response, it was probably that act that sent me over the top.
I think that now Paris Hilton and her look-alikes are less popular, we'll see a lot of these poor little guys at pounds and otherwise abandoned, much like their carry bags will be found at Goodwills throught the land!

It is sad, but true. When these dogs are treated as dogs and properly trained as dogs, they make a great companion... dog.
If I ever hear of people wanting a Chihuahua, I give them a little heads up, and push them in the direction of a rescue group since so many are being tossed away after they pee on everything and act like a dog instead of toy.

Considering that they apparently were originally bred for religious purposes (ie. being sacrificed on bloody altars) and for food, is being an accessory all that bad?

Personally, I can't stand them and think the Toltecs had the right ideas. It seems that it was the Toltecs not the Aztecs that first bred these pitiful dogs.

Mexican dogs are as bad as Mexican beers, a pale shadow of the real thing.

@albanian... with owning these dogs for over 15 years (before the taco bell ads) I have found that people either love 'em or hate 'em.
Especially people who have had a bad experience with them.
(and I would blame the bad rap on the owners and not the dog)

If I were to compare my current old lady Chihuahua to a Mexican beer, I'd say that she's a Negra Modelo.
Nice, dark and somewhat smooth.
(that's the only Mexican beer I can tolerate)

I agree that Negro Modelo is the exception, among the ones that are imported. I also found an obscure good dark beer in the Yucatan but it was hard to find and is not imported. As for the rest, they're as bad as Chihuahuas. I really doubt a Chihuahua could take on a rat. Maybe a mouse.

It is inappropriate to use fact refuted unless you really have factual refutation. While there is a little debate, most sources trace these dogs to the Toltecs. And a utube video isn't even a source for anything factual.

You should reserve fact refuted for when an answer actually gets a fact wrong, not when there is debate about degree etc. Your own source says that the chihuahua was probably descended from the Toltec's dogs. The only scientific reference that I found says that they are closely related to the Mexican Hairless. Either way my answer was not wrong. You seem to care a heck of a lot more about these dogs than I do, you should have written your own answer instead of attacking mine. And whether Aztecs should be called Aztecs is totally irrelevant to this question; but, it is definitely the accepted usage.

I think it is ok to refute a fact given that part of the answer is missinformed.

By the way, the last time I checked, Mexican beers are at least beers and the real thing is certainly not in North America.

Let me clarify my original answer since others have completely wandered from the issue.

The answer is no, they are not considered accessories by society.

The great majority of people consider them annoying, rat-like creatures that are not real dogs. Remember that 50% of society is male. Virtually no male would ever want a chihuahua, nor do males treat any dogs as fashion accessories. Most women are more sensible about animals than that too. The notion of chihuahuas and other small dogs as accessories only extends to fashion conscious teenage girls and a few high fashion and wannabe high fashion women. They are a small minority, even if they fill the tabloids.

I strongly suspect most of society would just as soon all chihuahua's were sacrificed to the gods or eaten, and would prefer never to hear or see any of them again.

I have seen people proudly displaying their Chihuahua like an expensive purse.
With the cute head poking out of a cute little carry bag, this dog is an expensive accessory to display. Look at that cute little face!!! How can it be just a dog?
You can walk the Chihuahua like a regular dog. It will not do the duties of a dog.
So, i think, it is just an accessory. Thanks to Paris Hilton and Tinker bell.

From what I've seen in the media, I would have to say that our society thinks of the chihuahua as an accessory. Certainly that's the impression given by Taco Bell, Paris Hilton, and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua."

I imagine though that most people who own a chihuahua think of theirs as a dog, pet, and part of the family.

I guess it all depends on the mentality of the owner. I would like to see more Chihuahuas be able to act like dogs meaning they are left to walk on a leash and actually be socialized. We see numerous Chihuahuas that have only been carried by their owners and when we try to handle them they want to bite, growl, snarl and are so scared they seem like they may have heart failure! Chihuahuas can be great pets - very loving and loyal, and really do make a cute purse puppy or dress up dog but I really wish people would start by letting the dog be a dog!

My Chihuahua, Mr. Bean is a sweet pup and a hell of a dog - he's not an accessory in our house - shoot, he RUNS the joint!!! (I wish I had a pic up here at work, but I don't!!)

But no. Dogs, no matter what the species, are not an accessory no matter what Ms. Hilton or the posh upper crust think. In fact, I think that keeping a dog in your purse or backpack is kind of mean.

I am amazed by the popularity of the Chihuahuas at least in my community. And the breading of Chihuahua mixes is just crazy. They are clearly not a "DOG", not a guard dog, not a working dog, not even a dog for children because they are so frail... although they will yap a lot.... To me I see them more as an accessory.

I personally always thought of them as large rats (my parents had one and no it didn't get carried around by my mom in her purse, she actually really didn't like the dog). Ariel (the dog) was yippy and irriataing but was treated like a dog and acted like one. This was well before the Taco Bell ads and people started carrying them like accessories. I believe society views them as accessories and toys which is sad. Ariel, while she was yippy and hyper was a happy dog. She played with me and my siblings, she got to run around the yard and play with the other dogs. She was neither timid nor frightened at everything like so many of the "accessory" dogs are. Once trained she didn't nip or growl or bite at anyone (she was still yippy). While I don't personally care for them (I like real dogs), dogs should be treated as dogs, as a part of your family, as companions but not as a piece of jewelry or baggage.

I think people who have this dog usually treat it as a baby. Because, they can dress it up and take it place's. Show it off and baby it. They do not get fat, stretch marks or have to breast feed it. It is an easy baby for the people who do not want the real deal and all the responsibility that come's with having children.

I think that everyone treats a chihuahua as a dog behind closed doors but because of the media and the stars that portray it as an accessory, kids, teenagers and adults tend to copy them(so-called role models) and in public, they treat their dogs as accessories as well only to get the attention that they so badly want.

I don't think that society as a whole views the Chihuahua as a fashion accessory, but sadly, some people do.

My dog is part Chihuahua, and sometimes I carry her places with me or dress her. However, I do not view her as an accessory whatsoever. On the contrary, I view her as a legitimate member of the family. She is admittedly spoiled, but I realize she is still a dog, as well.

If anything, I think society is personifying pets, especially dogs, more than ever before. It's not only limited to Chihuahuas, but any small breed seems to be extra-popular these days because people want to treat them like babies.

(This jacket was actually serving a purpose. It was super cold in my house during an ice storm this past winter, and she was freezing).

Depending on the owners situation a chihuahua could be a dog or an accessory. If the chihuahua owner is a celebrity it is most likely that they would use their chihuahua as a fashion accessory to grab media attention. If the chihuahua is owned by a non-celebrity it may be treated as a dog.I myself have never seen a chihuahua that is either not dressed up in something such as a pink diamond studded jacket or is being held in a handbag. The media also seems to potray chihuahuas in such a fashion. This would lead me to believe that nowadays the chihuahua is mostly viewed as a fashion accessory.

Always an accessory today. You can't watch a movie or read a magazine without some girl carrying a chihuahua in her purse. I love my dogs but I really don't think they should be set on a kitchen counter or on a table where you will be eating your meal from. Has anybody ever heard of germs? They are adorable but at some point you have to draw the line, they day the actually talk back to you is the day they will be more than just an extra family member with four legs.

I own a chihuahua I don't carry my dog in a little bag. Actually my dog doesn't like to be carried at all she was built for walking so she wants to walk. Those who think they are accessories are cruel and shouldn't own a pet. You wouldn't stick a midget in a backpack and parade them around town so don't do it with your pets. If you buy a pet and bring it to your home it becomes family no matter the size or breed. So people should treat them as such. So the answer is no they shouldn't be treated as an accessory.
