Do you think that cheerleaders have to work hard?

I am not a cheerleader. But I wanted to be one when I was growing up. Is it really hard to become one? Do they have to exercise a lot in order to look good and be in shape? What do you think?

When I was younger, I was a junior cheerleader for six years (and then I coached junior cheerleading for three years). It was fun at that time and, of course, nothing you had to try out for. You just signed up and you were a cheerleader. However, I did try out for high school cheerleading and it was rather tough considering my experience. I am sure trying out for professional teams is much harder.

Cheerleading is all about teamwork, poise and attitude. It is tough. It is strict. You have to keep your arms straight, your wrists cannot be bent (which is tougher than you think and frowned upon a lot!) and you have to strike perfect moves during cheers or dances. You have to cheer properly (try not to sing your words). You have to perform stunts on your own or with other cheerleaders. You need to have the strength to be the base in pyramids or be lifted in one. During all of this, you have to smile the entire time.

I think being a cheerleader in general, you need to be in shape and work out on a regular basis. You do not need to be skinny, but at least toned. Again, you need to have the strength to perform stunts or be a base in pyramids. You need to have the energy to perform. I think to be a professional cheerleader (say, for a sports team), looking good is often a plus.

yes i think they have to do lots of hard work to be in shape and active all the time.people like to see beautiful and attractive cheerleaders, so to maintain that figure they have to take lots of care and precautions.they have to do lots of dance, smiling and standing for lots of time so they should have good strength.

Cheerleaders absolutely have to work hard. I was one in middle school somehow -- and this is at a private school, where it wasn't even at the highest level -- and I had practice all the time, fairly rigorous practice. Exercise these days doesn't even come close.

And then the actual cheerleading itself can be difficult, especially when you get to the complicated routines and anything involving pyramids and the like. It's dangerous, too. If you screw up, someone could die. I was always base, so I wasn't at risk of falling from a height, but still.

I agree, it is dangerous. I've seen many cheerleaders get broken noses due to not catching another cheerleader properly from a pyramid and being hit in the face. I think I was more terrified of being a base than anything.

Acrobatic sports like cheerleading are definitely something that takes time and dedication. I would however not say it is hard but appealing and when something is appealing to someone it makes it easier for them to jump on the horse... Most cheerleaders do it because it is fun and they like it so i wouldnt say it was hard but does take time and dedication.

Cheerleaders are ATHLETES. My niece trained at least eight hours a week plus practice. She has to stay muscular and fit. This is not just about looking pretty. She has to keep her grades up, dress apropriately, and keep her body in top condition.

Cheerleaders are athletes, and there are national and international competitions. All competitive athletes work hard.

Depending on the level at which you plan to participate it can be very challenging and competitive. Middle school and jr varsity cheer leading at the high school level are open to everyone. They perform basic moves and cheers that do take practice but are relatively easy to master. Varsity cheer leading is competitive because you have to be able to make the team first of all because they can cut you if you are not up to par. Varsity cheer leading can involve difficult and somewhat dangerous aerial stunts and difficult cheers.
College level and professional cheer leading are very competitive and require dance experience and at least a few years of cheer leading experience. They do very complex and high flying aerial stuns and difficult and complex routines.
