Wedging is the process of kneading the clay with the hands. The purpose is to remove air bubbles, it wakes up the particles getting them ready for the wheel, and ensure a homogeneous mass (no wet or dry spots.

Wedging is repeatedly slamming the wet clay on a hard surface to force the particles to realign into layers.
