I have an iPhone an feel there are definitely some things work looking forward to. However, I also think it is time that Apple did fine a new network.

1. Find my Iphone - now you can find your phone from any browser using MobileMe. It'll locate it on a map and even remote-wipe the data if you know it has been stolen. Finally, you can make it play a sound if you lost it in your house, even if its on silent.

2. TomTom GPS App - The iPhone is now ready to give you turn by turn instructions and responds to voice prompts like any GPS.

3. Movies on the go - you can now rent or purchase movies/audiobooks from your iPhone.

4. Improved Safari App - browse the web quicker and easier!

5. MMS, like you mentioned, is the feature I'm looking forward to most. However, it is true that it won't be available everywhere.

6. Cut and paste - I don't have much need for it on my phone, but some people are all about it. It'll make things easier.

7. Tethering - you also mentioned this, but it may end up being more of a novelty anyways for many users. This would be more helpful for people who are constantly on-the-go than for casual users.

I personally wish the iPhone was on Verizon, because I liked their service much more before I switched. However, I can't complain cause AT&T has been pretty good thus far and I can't get enough of those roll-over minutes. You are right, a lot of the changes seem like novelties that many people won't really capitalize on, but if there is even one feature that would allow you to use your phone better, the 3.0 update would be worth the wait.

Not a lot. The other posters already mentioned most stuff and everything worthwhile (tethering, for example) won't be available at launch. The new hardware specs are nice, too but were already implemented in iPod Touch and how many apps actually take advantage of that extra speed? Since programmers develop for the lowest common denominator, that means little benefit to having the extra RAM and CPU power (of course, if Apple enabled multitasking it would be a different story...). I wonder why everyone was worried about Palm's launch being overshadowed because there's nothing to get excited about here. Every big feature should have been present at launch and AT&T cannot even get their act together enough to have the should-have-been-there-at-launch features available at the third launch! AT&T doesn't have much in the way of excuses either as they have one of the most expensive data plans around (only falling short of Verizon's astronomical prices as I recall). In short, it's a nice little upgrade and an excellent phone, but certainly not worth the focus everyone put on the keynote.
