Unfortunately, none of Verizon's phones can truly compare to the iPhone. The iPhone's strength is in it's connection to Apple (iTunes and the App Store). However, if you're willing to look beyond that and find a great touch screen wireless device, you should look into the LG Dare. It not only offers a similar look as the iPhone, it has a respectable camera and intuitive controls.
Now, if your heart is set on an iPhone, and you believe some of the rumors going around, Verizon may be planning to introduce an iPhone of their own. It may not be the exact same thing as the iPhone of today, but it will be the closest thing to the real deal.

I would suggest that the best iPhone alternative currently available from Verizon would be the BlackBerry Storm.

I would definitely wait out any expiring contract until June. The WWDC is set for June 8 at 10 a.m. There are rumors of an "iPhone nano" like device being introduced by Apple at this event.

I switched to AT&T because of the crap phones that Verizon had. Seeing them pass up the iPhone, Android Phone, and the upcoming Palm Pre, I'm guessing they must have something up their sleeves. Supposedly they have 4G capabilities with their network and will probably pick up the iPhone in 2010 when the Apple/AT&T contract expires in 2010. The BlackBerry Storm is crap, in my opinion, it is way too laggy and the touch screen takes some getting used to.

It is nearly impossible to find a phone that compares to the iPhone from Verizon, the App Store kills the competition. Verizon thinks their Voyager is iPhone competition, enough said.
