Try Nimbuzz, it's ad free and supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Gtalk, Facebook, Skype, etc, etc.
Although, it does require registration on their site.

If you absolutely require a native AIM client (for free) I recommend Palringo Instant messenger lite. Unfortunately it is ad supported but trust me, I don't think you'll mind. Palringo has many advanced features that I've been enjoying on my iPhone 3G for some time now:
Chat using MSN, AIM, Yahoo, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber, iChat/MobileMe, Gadu-Gadu, and now even Facebook Chat.
Send voice messages (works like a walkie-talkie)
Picture sending.
Location sharing.
There are more features but those are the ones most useful to me. Below is the iTunes link to the program, I hope you give it a shot.

Just because their free, doesn't mean they don't suck. I know how to search iTunes. Instead of wasting the time downloading and reviewing every single one. I was hoping to get the opinions of people that may use a free, ad-free AIM application that they love.
