I don't think you really need to buy one -- Here are some essential iPhone apps that you are missing
1. Google Reader
No doubt one of the exciting things with phones these days is being able to get information right there and then. And the Google Reader application by David Cann takes your RSS reading to a whole new level.

2. iPhone Digg
For the avid digg user with an iPhone, this is a must. It has a really easy to use scrolling interface to maximize the small space available and shows you the current Digg count on the articles you are reading.

3. iPhlickr
Flickr + iPhone = Awesome Photo Browsing, Anytime, Anywhere. No, it really is that cool, you know, for those times you need to look up what a Crotalus Oreganus snake looks like.

4. iZoho
One of the conveniences of the iPhone is being a good device for business use. Zoho, one of the best office suites on the web, is being used by more businesses everyday. Docs/spreadsheets/presentations on iPhone? iZoho.

5.Fring:
The only IM/messaing client you need. Covers Google Talk, AIM, Skype, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Twitter, plus VoIP calls over Wi-Fi if you're low on minutes at home or in the coffee shop.

6. Multimedia
The multimedia list is a big one, so I'll just highlight a few. You've got a Last.fm client and scrobbler , a feature-rich camera app, and a real-time lyrics app that automagically sucks lyrics for your music from the cloud.
http://lifehacker.com/assets/images/gallery/17/2008/01/medium_2160637507_c144dc9065_o.png
7. Remote:
One of the first apps I saw, and still among the best in terms of usefulness. If you use iTunes frequently at home and especially if you listen away from your desk via a stereo hookup or Airport Express, you need the Remote.
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/11/Picture_4_02.png
8. Utilities
There are obviously quite a few great iPhone utilities, so to highlight just a few: OpenSSH is what I used to tether my iPhone data plan to my laptop; DropCopy is great for sharing files between your phone or iPod and your desktop; Installer, obviously, is the app that makes all of this third-party app business so easy; Navizon does the faux-GPS for Google Maps; and Customize covers app re-ordering and just about any other customization you'd want to make to your little iPod or iPhone.

9. OneTrip Shopping List
By far the most simple but surprisingly useful iPhone app yet to be developed, OneTrip has a simple and ingenious interface for quickly organizing and building a shopping list. It's simple, and any iPhone user should find it incredibly useful.
http://cache.lifehacker.com/assets/images/gallery/17/2007/06/medium_656730844_bdf1713628_o.png
THERE ARE STILL TONS OF FREE APPS AROUND BUT THAT DEPENDS ON YOUR PREFERENCES, IF YOU REALLY WANT TO BUY ONE , THINK TWICE, SEE IF THERE ARE ANY ALTERNATIVES & BUY ONE IF YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED ONE.....

IfFound is a great application that creates backgrounds that include your contact information if someone finds your phone so they can get it back to you.
Manual of the United States. This is a wonderful encyclopedia of American information (if you're American, that is) that includes the entire Constitution, Amendments, list of Presidents, and other useful documents.
Wikipanion. Quick, easy access to Wikipedia.
And, finally, Light. Turns your screen into a light. Use if far more than I ever thought I would.
Enjoy your new iPhone!!!

I'd suggest, instead of buying anything, do check out the TOP25 list on the free side, many of them would be great. Also, check back weekly and see what new apps are being added, and download those to your liking.
Insofar specific apps go, I reccommand the following:
vlingo (voice app)
remote (control itunes on your comp using iphone)
shazam (listen to music and tell you what song it is)
snapTell (shazam's picture counterpart; take a pic of a book or CD or DVD etc. cover to search the particular item)
mazeFinger, Topple (decent games, free for a short while)
Labyrinth, Penguin (both have free and paid versions)
iSteam and last but not least, Fake calls (which is exactly what it sounds like.)
Hope you enjoy them!

It's a lot of fun, easy to play, and with excellent graphics and loads of character.
Here's some video:

and here's a great review:
http://www.tuaw.com/2008/12/18/tuaw-goes-hands-on-with-rolando/
It is a bit pricey (I think $10), but I think it's worth it.
I also liked FieldRunners, which someone else mentioned here.

Tap Defense and Fieldrunners are two excellent tower defense games that have sucked a lot of time away from me when I need to waste that time. Tap Defense is free. The best things in life are free. In fact, out of the 4 apps I bought, NONE of them worked as well as advertised and their FREE counterparts are just as good. Therefore, the short answer is that unless you really need a functionality (such as a extra-high-end graphing calculator), don't buy it. I'd suggest, instead of buying anything, do check out the TOP25 list on the free side, many of them would be great. Also, check back weekly and see what new apps are being added, and download those to your liking.
