It's certainly a great phone, and I believe the best phones are not necessarily the ones with a lot of features, yet the ones that have easy to use features. I believe it will sell well because of all of its Internet capabilities, and I also believe Palm has nothing inferior to iPhone or Blackberry, it's just people liked those brands. I think people will like the Palm as well, and Palm has always had a group of people who liked its Treo phones, so this one should be no different. The only thing is, Palm has to be competitive with the price, as that's the reason I believe some of the other phones beat it in the past, as the Treo phones were very expensive. I personally do not like the design of it, yet that's just me, as I've never been crazy about the odd curves in it. Some other people might like the design. It may grow on some people. We will definitely see with this one!

And, it has copy and paste! The iPhone doesn't look like it's competing with this feature anytime soon.

Thoughts on the just-unveiled Palm Pre?
Will you buy one? Could this be real competition for the iPhone and BlackBerry? Is Palm back?

• Agreed with your thoughts on pricing and the design. I'm not crazy about the look of it either, which seems kind of toy-like and slippery in your hands.

That depends - how are apps distributed? If its an app-store like model, then it will be real competition. A *big* plus would be if the phone is available from Palm for developers, like how the G1 is available from Google for developers... If it is, great. If not, then I fear it will be just like all the other attempts to take on the iPhone... Developers, developers, developers.

The features seem nice and the focus on Internet capabilities will help it sell, I think. And the inclusion of the keyboard will help bolster it's popularity among people feed up with touchscreen keyboards. But the overall design of it...it just isn't terribly appealing or sleek looking, in my opinion. The curved edges and the plastic sheen make it look something like a bubble children's toy. It also appears to be rather large.

I love the new Pre. It's what Palm needed. Just having an actual keyboard is going to sway some people but the UI looks very nice. Very iPhone like, with a bit of Android combined with it's own style. And, it has copy and paste! The iPhone doesn't look like it's competing with this feature anytime soon.

I will buy it as soon as it comes to Verizon. The worst word in the presentation was "Sprint". The best two words that almost make up for that are "launch partner", so the exclusive is for the launch. The success of the Pre will depend on how soon they can get it to some real carriers.

Oh yeah, Palm is back... Sure, the wait was too long, but the result is pretty darn impressive. I like the features so far, I think they're on par with the competition of iPhone and Blackberry. It now depends on the price, and availability on carriers. I'd love to test one out, but so far from all of the coverage I've seen, I really like it. I agree with a previous answer that it is not the big groundbreaking deal the Treo was, but it sure is a solid competitor to Blackberry and iPhone.

Palm has always been about usability and sleakness and this new OS seams to be the move in the right direction, they seam to get the consumer market much better than RIM does. But the real question is will it catch on? I think it has potential, but in a time were the market is being dominated by the iPhone is there a place for PALM? I think Palm has had so many misteps in the last years it is about time they woke up! BTW if a guy like Peter Rojas is more excited to attend the PALM keynote than Apples "Phillnote" I would seriously consider Palm for a comeback!

The hardware looks nice. However, the Palm website makes no mention of MacOS support for email or syncing to any desktop at all. It does mention Outlook. It seems that all sycing will be web based. "Pre uses the Palm® Synergy™ feature to bring your Outlook®,2 Google, and Facebook® calendars together for one logical view of your day. " 8GB RAM and no expansion slot.
The charger is wireless, inductive type and does not provide a data connection.
Palm also makes no references to compatibility with the 10000s of current PalmOS apps.

I will buy one. I would like to see one up close and I have a lot of unanswered questions that need to be answered (older Palm OS application support, Flash support, Mac sync support), but so far, it looks like it's a winner and Palm spent a lot of time getting this one right.

I think this is fantastic for Palm. With what RIM and Apple have been doing, they kind of fell to the wayside, but this looks like this may put them back into the thick of things in the smartphone market. I have been waiting for the Blackberry Bold to come to Verizon for the longest time, but I might just switch to Sprint to get this if it ends up being as good as it looks. Since I go to a college with wifi coverage pretty much everywhere, wifi capability on a phone is a huge feature for me, so I'm pretty excited for the pre.

It looks very nice, and I have always loved the Palm desktop. But living in Canada, I will have to see how badly the carriers will hose me on the various plans. I do not overly care about the cost of phone it's the monthly costs that I am worried about. I work out that iPhone would be running be at least $200.00 a month... I like the look of the new Palm but it will be the operating cost at will be Buy/No Buy key

The truth is no company has really released any product that is of interest to me, after the iPhone was released, I havent seen any really good new and exciting phones being launched by other companies, except maybe this phone: http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/01/07/move-over-camera-phoneits-projector-phone-time/

I think it will be a big hit, I was one of the first dev's that worked on the original nova code, palm threw more money at this then any other product they have released in history. People have died so that this could be released.

If Palm can just simply copy the process of Apple's App Store, we have some SERIOUS competition in the house because after watching that keynote, the Pre can do everything the iPhone does and then some. What's more, it does things just like the iPhone: with style and grace. It's elegant, and I can't wait to see what Palm pulls out of its hat with regard to the App Store. To me, that is the key to this product's success. Otherwise, it'll be just another smart phone.
