Also, cell companies update their plans regularly, and often raise prices. IF you renew, you're required to change to a "current rate plan" I haven't renewed my Sprint contract in six years because my old rate plan isn't available anymore and as long as I don't change it, I don't lose it. This means every few years I shell out a few hundred when I want a new phone because I don't get any discounts, but my monthly plan saves me more than that cost me.
Hope this helps

The CHEAPEST plan you can "renew" with is probably the one you are already on and NOT renewing. Cell companies sometimes use marketing that says your contract is about to expire and you need to renew it, you don't. They're not going to cut you off when your contract runs out, you will just be contract free and able to go month to month. Especially if you are trying to get a deal, this could be your biggest bargaining chip. If they know you can leave at any time with no penalty because you're not in contract the company is more likely to work harder to keep you.
