The Blackberry Storm is a good candidate that is Verizon. It has a lot of quality apps and a great touchscreen keyboard. It's touchscreen, but it actually makes a click and gives you haptic feedback, which makes you feel as though you've pressed a physical button.
I have an iPhone 3G, but only because I have AT&T. If I had a choice between the two, I would've gone with the Storm.

RIM (the maker of BlackBerry devices) will be releasing an App store soon which will have a large number of applications but there are already several great apps out for blackberrys and most even have special Storm versions.
@stiritup you did mention that you are a big texter so I want to point out that the Storm on screen keyboard is a great option for texting once you get use to it. I went from an HTC handset with a full slide out qwerty keyboard and have been able to transition to the Storm very easily (I average between 3-5,000 text a month plus a large number of emails from the device)

Will their ever be a Verizon phone comparable to the iPhone? I'm sure there will be (or should I be? Is there anything comparable to the iPod?)! I think eventually the iPhone will be available for ALL phone networks.
However, to answer your question; I think the Palm Pre is your best bet. I doubt it'll be as good as the iPhone, but it looks really cool!
http://the-gadgeteer.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/palm-pre.jpg
The Palm Pre is a CDMA phone. Sprint and Verizon are the two big CDMA carriers. ATT and T-Mobile are GSM carriers and Palm's CEO says a GSM version of the phone will be released in the first half of 2009.
As for Verizon, the phone could theoretically work today on Verizon's network but Sprint has a 90 day exclusive contract. After that 90 day period it is HIGHLY likely that it will be made available to Verizon customers no latter than the end of 2Q 2009.
It might be worth you waiting for if you are a die hard verizon user. That said, I doubt it'll be as cool as the iPhone (imagine, a new verison is coming out by July probably!) Personally I'd get the new iPhone and switch over to AT&T. If you must stay with Verizon, I'd go with the Palm Pre :)
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Does Verizon have a phone comparable to the iphone or android? Will they ever?
I want to get a phone that has apps like Savvy Shopper, Twitter apps, to-do apps, facebook apps, etc. I really like Verizon and many of my contacts have Verizon - I would prefer to stay with them.
Does Verizon have a phone, or will they eventually have a phone that has apps? I really like the android - will it ever come to Verizon - or something like it? I am a big texter so I may want a qwerty or t9 keyboard but I like the idea of the touch screen.
Help! Thanks!

@mattman4 is right, the Storm is a good option from Verizon and I am sure there will be other phones coming that are going to compete in this market as well. RIM (the maker of BlackBerry devices) will be releasing an App store soon which will have a large number of applications but there are already several great apps out for blackberrys and most even have special Storm versions.

I only just got my iPhone about a month or two ago. When I went to the Verizon guys and basically said "Look, I'm the type of geek that's destined for an iPhone or an Android. Convince me to get a Storm?" and he said, and I quote, "Don't bother with the Storm, we've returned more than we've sold. It's got problems." He then went on to hand me a generic sales pitch about how both my wife and I wanted a Curve - despite the fact that I clearly said I'm the power user geek of the family who lives on the thing and wants every last little toy, and my wife barely uses SMS and doesn't even want a data plan. So I went with the iPhone.

You probably got the kind of sales guy that can just about grasp the concept: "We want to sell lots of Curves. You will get good commission for that".

@shakespearegeek as a power user/ubergeek I can speak to the needs/wants you would be looking at in a phone and I can say, without a doubt, that you went to an idiotic salesperson (which doesn't really surprise me since Verizon doesn't pay their sales people nearly enough to actually learn what they are selling).
I have messed around with several of my friends iPhones and I do like them a great deal. In the end I didn't switch carriers because the Storm really did what I wanted when it comes to my focus on business and email... as nice as the iPhone is I don't think it would keep up with me in that regards.

They tried...and failed, with the Blackberry Storm. The Storm is not even comparable to the iPhone, even when it's working properly (which evidently it's had trouble doing). The iPhone has some many great applications, and the storm hasn't even opened an app store yet (they're announced apps will either have to be "free" or their lowest pricing point is $2.99-no $.99 apps?)! Will their ever be a Verizon phone comparable to the iPhone? I'm sure there will be (or should I be? Is there anything comparable to the iPod?)!
