Great Question....only because I am a Geek and would love to answer this.
The iPhone (3g, 3gs, 1st gen) are all created by Apple and VERY VERY tightly controlled. The tight/closed infrastructure will eventually hurt their ecosystem but for the time being the marketing buzz is enough to make it one of the most popular smartphones around. The iPhone lacks a physical keyboard and that is a problem for many smartphone users.
The N900 is a new device which has a full keyboard and an OPEN architecture. The device runs on a LINUX based platform allowing it to run any application that is available for Linux. This very feature may make it a success because developers are free to create for it without going through a policing process.
So while its hard to say if one is better then the other, since that is personal preference.....I would say that the N900 is a contender in the battle of the smartphones.

What it boils down to is that most n900 users aren't going to use it as their main phone device. Its too large to be easily pockatable. However It is likely to be loved by bloggers, journalists and others who want a connected device where they can get some work done.

I don't think its going to be a better phone... however it is likely to be a better mini computer with phone connectivity. What it boils down to is that most n900 users aren't going to use it as their main phone device. Its too large to be easily pockatable. However It is likely to be loved by bloggers, journalists and others who want a connected device where they can get some work done.
