He's still working. He's currently filming "Wrong Turn at Tahoe" and "Red Tails", there are two more films rumored to be in pre-production, and "Hard Wired" is in post-production for release in 2010. According to IMDB, he's been involved with 3-4 movies per year for the last several years!
Considering his many awards and busy work schedule, my surmise is that Gooding can afford to pick roles he enjoys doing, rather than holding out for epics.
