Bristol Palin and her fiancé Levi Johnston have broken up, two sources tell PEOPLE.

The split happened "a few weeks ago," according to a source close to the couple, but it's unclear what precipitated it. "It was a mutual thing," adds the source.

"I'm not sure what caused to break up – it's common knowledge," says another source who knows the family.

Regarding why they separated... I would think it is related to how young they are. At that age, you don't have a very deep understanding of relationships or life. It's easy to have unrealistic expectations or not know what "happiness" is.

It's normal for teenagers to change rapidly themselves in terms of the type of person they want to be. Personalities and attitudes change. The relationship probably wasn't easy anymore and they likely didn't want to invest the time to try to work things out. It can be easier to break up. So, my summation would be that they're growing to be different people.

I would tend to think her mother doesn't approve. Then again, she probably has to choose to stand by her daughter regardless of her choices and will spin it in a positive way such as "Bristol took a stand for what she believes in and continues to be a strong devoted mother. I have no doubt that she will provide the guidance and love that a parent should and Levi will continue to be part of Tripp's life, blah blah blah"

SARAH Palin's teenage daughter, Bristol, has broken off her engagement to Levi Johnston two months after the birth of their child.

The 18-year-old daughter of the Alaskan Governor told the Associated Press she was "devastated" by the split.

"Unfortunately, my family has seen many people say and do many things to 'cash in' on the Palin name," she said in a statement.

"Sometimes that greed clouds good judgment and the truth."

Mr Johnston, 19, told AP the pair had mutually decided to end their relationship.

Bristol Palin's pregnancy was announced last summer days after her mother was named John McCain's running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

Bristol gave birth to a boy named Tripp on December 27.
