I agree that it wasn't exactly a pole dance. But joyannj, I think I understand what do you want to discuss.

My opinion:
I didn't feel that the dance was the end of the world. But I don't consider it appropriate, specially to a Teen Choice Award, because it clearly has sexy moves, short shorts...

And that is the problem! If you ask teenagers and many adults they'll say: "Nothing wrong, it's normal!". Media want us all to think that it is normal, that to be sexy is the best thing people can say about us. So cute...

I disagree, because there are lots of more important values. And in real life teenagers will face bullying, anorexia and other problems because they will fell "miserable" comparing to all this media circus.

I like Miley Cyrus, she has talent and she has a brain. But she is young, suffers pressures... I don't expect her to make everything right. Like she sings: "Nobody is perfect". Anyways, she should be more careful about her choices because she's famous.

I didn't see anything disgusting in it. She wasn't humping and grinding on that pole, she was just standing there. In fact, I think all the dancing sucked. Kinda ho-hum like none of them want to be there.

What's the big deal?

She didn't need to hump and grind the pole!

Its the suggestiveness of a stripper pole! Yeah her dancing sucked as well as her singing. And it was very awkward, which makes me think she was uncomfortable--which leads me to believe the adults involved arranged the "dance" --which is disgusting!

If this was a part of my daughters 'dance' routine, she'd be out of that dance class in a second!

Why is there a stripper pole at the TEEN Choice Awards to begin with?!?

bernices  |  August 10, 2009 05:40 PM
But it's not a stripper pole! It's a support on an ice cream cart so she doesn't fall and break her face and then everyone will know she's lip-syncing!

If she would have pole danced on it, this would be totally different. So if I stand next to a pole and wave my leg around a tad that would make me a pole dancer? Heck no! Doesn't even make me a pole-stand-beside-er...lol

Miley's mini skirt could have been a lot lot shorter, she has great legs, let's see em baby ! And her white tank top could have been lower cut, and no bra at that, with some sweat to, would made those nipples stand out really good ! Would have even been better if that white tank top was cut up from the bottom so u could see the curve of her boobs really good. .Miley, if ya gonna get the blood a pumping Baby, make it pump GOOD !

She held the pole and sang. No pole dancing occurred.

So, at 1:09, where she does a "stripper dip", that's not a stripper move? It's possible it's too early and I still have sleep in my eye.

Thank you! Doesn't appear to be a move taught in Tap & Jazz class

That kind of move is taught in Urban dance classes and not considered a "stripper" move in all cases... that kind of move is used with a slap of the palm on the ground as part of many break dance routines.

I think society is just set to naturally assume that doing this move, with a pole involved, as being negative, even though the pole is only there (at least in this case) as a stabilizer since the platform moves.

Maybe not the best choice considering it is the Teen Choice Awards but I think it is a stretch to consider any of this a "stripper" dance.

Don't blame Miley Cyrus. Blame society, which tells teenage (and preteen!) girls that the only way to be desirable is to participate in the arms race of performing sexuality, and that being desirable to future-fratboy douchebags is the only thing girls should aspire to. And lay an extra dollop of blame on Disney, who is making profits out the wazoo out of marketing the "fallen-womaning" of its stars.

I can't see the video but read your page.

Pole dancing may have started decades ago as an erotic entertainment; but, it has long since gone legitimate. It is widely popular in exercise classes in the USA and has become a popular form of exercise and gymnastics in China.

Given its inherent advantages in solo dancing (that's why the strippers used it to start with) pole dancing will probably become increasingly popular with women of all ages worldwide.

You gotta give anyone that can dance on a pole credit... the amount of body strength involved is really impressive, most people just don't realize that.

I was able to watch the video at home. That was no pole dance! She just held on while pushed around on a cart. Her outfit was normal. The whole thing was typical conservative Disney. Finding something to complain about on that video is positively Neolithic! Or maybe Taliban?

I didn't see anything wrong. She had the pole there for something to hold on to while the cart was pushed accross the stage.

I don't see her as a good role model in the least. She's a kid yet and trying to act like an adult, and a kind of sleazy one at that with her actions present and in the past. (ie, some of the pictures revealed of her on the internet) Furthermore she can't sing at all. If her dad wasn't Billy Ray Cyrus, she'd be nothing.

Why does it make you sick? I didn't see the teen choice awards so I can only go by what I see in this video. It's far away, so you can't really see the details, but overall I didn't see anything wrong with it.

I thought the performance was good and I actually kinda liked the song. I'm not Miley Cyrus fan, but this was the best thing I have heard from her so far. The pole might have been a little suggestive, but she didn't dance inappropriately on it. I agree with @bernices in that is was more used as a support so she didn't fall off when they moved the box she was standing on.

I think the stripper dip was a pretty poor choice on her part, but I think the grossly short shorts, as well as the teeny tiny mini skirt she wore to the show, send out a worse message to her young fan base. No way in hell would my 15/16 yr old be leaving the house in this!

I did not really see any pole dancing so to speak. I would be very upset if such thing took place for I have 5 grandchildren that watch her shows faithfully. I do have to agree with I would not allow my daughter/grandaughter to dress like this for any occasion. However, I am sure that the " movie industry" has alot to do with her appearance and what clothing she wears.
It must be OK with her dad or he would put a stop to something outrageous as her clothing and doing a "pole dance".
