In the US, Nielsen estimated nearly 31 Million for the Jackson service, and 33.3 Million for Princess Diana's (though Time Magazine reported 50 Million). In the UK, around 6 Million were estimated to have watched the former, while around 30 Million viewed Princess Diana's funeral.

The figures are in for US TV viewers, and it looks like that was around 31m for Michael Jackson, whereras it was 33m for Princess Diana.
I say "the figures", but if people watched a daytime event on a workday in bars and airports or around sets in their workplaces, there's no good way to estimate that.
On top of that 1997 not many people in the US would have been able to watch online, whereas it looks like at least 35m people may have watched streams. Whether they were all in the US is not so easy to know.
If you want worldwide figures that's even harder to know, and even the estimates aren't in. But apparently the organisers estimate a worlwide audience of 1 billion. The BBC estimated a worldwide audience of 2.5 billion for Princess Diana's funeral.
If you are considering worldwide numbers you also have to remember that the number of TV sets has grown a lot since 1997, so any given number is a smaller audience share in 2009 than it would have been then.
All things considered, it's probably safe to say that more Americans saw some part of MJ's funeral than Princess Diana's, but worldwide it was the other way around.

Princess Diana's funeral had higher network ratings. I watched neither.

It is almost impossible to estimate audience numbers accurately, if the question is related to world wide viewership across all media. The BBC estimated that 2.5 Billion people from across the world watched the funeral of Princess Diana. The Michael Jackson memorial organizer expected an audience of around 1 Billion.

Like most stats, it's not as straightforward a question as it seems. The figures are in for US TV viewers, and it looks like that was around 31m for Michael Jackson, whereras it was 33m for Princess Diana.
