The people who enabled him with drugs certainly understood exactly how deadly they were. Did they murder him in a premeditated way? I doubt it because he would be worth more to these folks alive (i.e. a money-making machine they could pull money from year after year).

However, did they show gross indifference to the dangers of the drugs they were giving him? Certainly that seems to be the case. So, I think they showed gross indifference to the consequences of their own enabling behavior.

If he was murdered I don't think we will ever know because he was clearly on so many drugs that it's impossible to know what exactly killed him.
