• Well I do know for a fact that a cat will purr as it is dying, does that equate with happiness? Maybe it does, but that should be a whole new conversation.

Purring is a part of the feline comunication skills.
cats purr for different reasons.
cats purr as a way to show they are content and happy
some cats also purr when they are sick, frightened or even close to their death.

There are many theories to explain how the purr is generated. One study determined that purring involves activation of nerves within the voice box. These nerve signals cause vibration of the vocal cords while the diaphragm serves as a piston pump, pushing air in and out of the vibrating cords, thus creating a musical hum. Veterinarian Neils C. Pederson, author of Feline Husbandry, believes that purring is initiated from within the central nervous system and is a voluntary act. In other words, cats purr only when they want to.(http://www.petplace.com/cats/why-do-cats-purr/page1.aspx)

Humans happen to smile and laugh when they are happy, and dogs wag their tails. So it is not unusual for an animal to have a physical reaction to happiness. Cats show happiness by purring. They may also purr when startled or upset.

A dog's tail wagging is not a show of happiness, but a show of alertness. Many, many people have been bitten thinking the doggy was happy, only to find that the doggy was thinking about having a hand for lunch.

Good point kaiote, I have been involved in animal rescue for many years and a dog wagging its tail is no sign that it wants to get to know you, it just means it is alert enough to know there is some action going on, and that can be misleaingly dangerous.
