For 2 players, easy to learn, simple fun with a good amount of depth, try Carcassonne. It's a board game (Though you can get it on Xbox live arcade for $5, it's more fun in person). You take turns placing tiles, and claim cities, roads, and farms to earn as many points as possible. The game can be picked up in 10 minutes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carcassonne_(board_game)
This game comes as my highest recommendation. It plays best with 2 people but up to 5 can play with no expansions. With more players, the outcomes are more random, but even in a 2 player game, a relatively inexperienced player has a reasonable chance at winning the game. There is some luck involved, but skill does play a greater part. In a 5 player game, it's almost all luck, but it's still very fun!
Here's another board game for 2 players. It plays very quickly, and is quite fun. It's called Saikoro, and boils down to being a box with a bunch of dice in it - you shake the dice up, and then move your pieces around. There are only a couple rules - you need to move the number of spaces on the die that you are moving to, you need to stay within six squares of your opponent, and when you move, you remove the die you were on. If you can't move, you lose.
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/27813
If you want to try a deeper, more complicated game that takes longer to learn and longer to play, check out Agricola. It's a game about farming, and can even be played alone. It's a bit deep to get in to within the context of this post, but you might find it interesting. As it's more complex, this isn't a game that young children will really enjoy. It's also a lot more skill based, so a poor player will always lose to a good player.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agricola_(boardgame)
None of these three games will be bad with only 2 players. Carcassone is best as a 2 player game, Saikoro *is* a 2 player game, and Agricola holds up well with any number of players, there's somewhat less interaction between people.
Chess, Go, and Backgammon are classics, of course. Do I need to go in to those?
If video games are more your preference, if you have a Wii, check out Mario Kart, a fun, light kart racing game, and Smash Brothers Brawl, a fighting game that's very easy to pick up, fun for two people, and a blast with four. If you have an Xbox360, there are three great board games on Xbox Live - Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, and one which I forget and have not played, but is rated well (Lost Cities, I think).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_kart
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Smash_Bros._Brawl
Magic: The Gathering is fun, but it is better if it's more of a hobby. If you get a couple preconstructed decks that are about even with each other, it can be fun, but if you want to get in to it more, it requires a sizable budget, and you need to spend a fair amount of time studying cards and decks. I have played it in the past and enjoyed it, but don't play it at this moment.

It's called "Mystery Rummy #1: Jack the Ripper" by Mike Fitzgerald.
The game takes minutes to learn, but long to master. It involves the true life murders of Jack the Ripper -- and the actual 1880s locations in London, actual Detective Figures, real-life suspects of the day, Suspect Alibis, and a few other surprising and daring tricks.
Will you nail Jack the Ripper and win the bonus? Or will he evade capture altogether (this often happens).
My wife and I liked this game so much that we planned a trip to London to take the Jack the Ripper Tour (offered by former Scotland Yard detective Donald Rumbelow).
ALSO, the cool thing about this game is that, once you are ready to move on, there several others in the Mystery Rummy series including: Murders in the Rue Morgue (Poe), Jekyll & Hyde, Al Capone, etc.
Everyone that I have bought this game for has loved it -- and I just cannot get enough of this game. Despite losing interest in most games, this one always finds its way into my suitcase whenever I am leaving on vacation. Need I say more?
The game is available from Amazon.com, Ebay, and other speciality game shops.

There is also a travel size that has only two colors but I think this is easier to win (if you play right!) than the larger version. You will hooked.

Can you help me find a good two-person game?
The Mister and I like to play board games, card games, and other sorts of games when we have time at night together. It's a nice change of pace from watching TV or surfing the 'net. I'm looking for fun, easy-to-play games that have good game mechanics for just two people. A lot of games that say "from 2 to X players" can be played by two players, but aren't actually very fun with just a pair playing.

Yet another fun little game, which is quite good with 2 players is Guillotine - it's very simple. You have a line of French people in line to be beheaded, and you have cards that modify the line. Different people (Such as Marie Antionette) are worth different numbers of points. It's so easy to pick up that you can just hand someone the cards, tell them the goal, and play, because the basic framework of the game is so simple.

I think a great 2-4 person game is Blokus. (Then again, I am a Math Geek). For two players, you each select a color, such as red and blue. Then you each place one piece on the game board at a time. The object is to place the most number of squares (each piece has 1 to 5 squares in a variety of shapes), while simultaneously trying to prevent your opponent from placing his/her pieces. It is a puzzle/strategy game that is a lot of fun. Since the game has four colors each person can control two colors each which makes it even more challenging.
There is also a travel size that has only two colors but I think this is easier to win (if you play right!) than the larger version. You will hooked.

once the game starts, the server sends both players an email with the board rendered in ascii art in the body. if it's your turn, reply to that mail, put your password and move into the subject: field and (optionally) put a message into the body. the server decides if your move was legal, and sends the updated board to each player.
then your opponent moves and you lather rinse and repeat.

A great card game that works well with 2 people (or 3 or 4) is Mille Bornes. It's Parker Brothers game where each person trys to complete a road trip of 1000 miles. You need a green light to begin your trip and then you can start playing mile cards. However your opponent will try to stop you with flat tires, out of gas, speed limits, etc... There are 4 special cards that help you to become invulnerable against each of the disaster cards... i.e. "Puncture proof" tires protect you from flat tires. This game is fairly easy to play, but each game takes on a flow all it's own depending on which of the special cards you draw. I remember many games I've played of this game with my mother or with a friend. Check out these links to find out more. If you like a challenge, I suggest the ancient Chinese game of "Go." Go is played by alternately placing stones on the intersections of a 19 x 19 board to capture territory (the intersections) and prevent your opponent from doing the same. The rules are simple, but the combinations complex ("after 10,000 games you can consider yourself a beginner"). For a lighter alternative, consider "Go Moku," played with the same board and stones, but with a completely different goal - to place five stones in a row (diagonally, vertically, or horizontally) - kind of like tic-tac-toe on steriods.

- Fact Refuted
Having played the demo, I'll agree that it's a great game. But for many people, it isn't going to be easy to play, and is more intense/scary than fun. It also takes reasonably modern PCs to run it, and I've run across a lot of Mac users here. Most people's Macs won't run this game (MacBook), and the average cheapo PC won't either. I almost made a note of it in my ginormous post, but didn't include it because it's more appropriate for experienced computer FPS gamers.
