I've been doing A LOT of research on this exact topic. I'm actually sold in the Ford Escape Hybrid. I know they don't seem like the normal choice. But fuel economy to size ratio I don't think anybody else is even in the ball park.

My backup choice would probably be a Toyota Prius. But you do lose a good bit of room for more fuel economy. You also save just a little on price; however, if you start looking at the package you get a bit more with the Escape. Also the Escape is a good choice if your like me and could use the 4wd in the winner.
