I'm looking to buy speakers for my car (Aurora 2001). What brand should I get? What are some gotchas?Any tips?

I have an Oldsmobile Aurora from 2001 which has a set of pathetic front speakers. I'm looking to get them replaced and am looking for shopping recommendations. Not looking for anything fancy, I'll be happy as long as it sounds slightly better than the OEM ones.

So far, the only tip that I've gotten from several friends is to go with Pioneer. Are brands actually that important? Any shopping tips and gotchas to look for? And if there are some Canadians out there, from where should I get them (So far, I'm thinking Future Shop or Canadian Tire)?

How do I know which the front speakers are? Any good links that show this information?

Well considering you dont want something fancy then i would recommend the following pioneer car speakers TS G6842R ,30 Watt output that go from $20-$ 60 from online retailers.Alternatively you could get Pioneer TS T110 ,40 watt, a measure of power, output for between $20 and $40 online. And yes the brands are mighty important because they determine the quality of the sound i.e sound clarity and output .Anything fancier than that then try Bose. I hope this information was helpful.

PIoneer I have found very reliable. I have had some for a while now in my 00 mitsubishi galant. Brands do matter, but I found that pioneers offer high quality audio for little price. If you go to a major chain they usually have a room that you may test out the speakers.

Wow, i have no idea. I usually buy a car with those things installed; however, you can buy the exact ones on Ebay so they might have some suggestions there. If it was me, i would probably stick with the brand and buy Aurora Acoustics, check Google.

This question will likely get you a different answer from everyone that responds. Speakers are a rather personal thing which is the reason you will find so many different options on the market. I would suggest taking a listen at your local Car Audio shop and see if anything sounds right to you. In the end you are probably safe setting a price limit and finding a set of speakers that are close to the max you are willing to spend.

As for my personal opinion, I have had very good luck with Polk Audio and JBL speakers. If you are looking for a step up try looking at component systems that separate the woofer and tweeter giving a cleaner sound.

Be sure to check out your options at Crutchfield, they have a lot of information and choices if you decide to make a purchase!

Crutchfield is a great site to look through and purchase audio components. The only real good audio magazine still in print if you want to thumb through some reviews is Performance Auto and Sound that you should be able to find at any decent newsstand.

What size are your current front speakers? Both my cars have 4" front speakers which limits the choices immensely. I have a set of VDO Dayton 4" splits in the front of my main car, which basically means the tweeters are mounted separately from the woofers, and there is a passive crossover to split the frequencies to send the highs to the tweeters. This results in better sound because the tweeters can be mounted at ear height (since high frequencies are very directional) while the lower frequencies are more able to reach your ears intact since they are more omnidirectional.
