Wired did an article about a veterinary technician who partnered with other animal professionals to design a safety harness for dogs (link to her site with videos from the article): http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/02/sue_roakes_seat.html
According to retailers, restraining your pets using a seat belt is safer for both them and you. They are less likely to get injured in a collision, less apt to distract you and cause a collision and will be unable to run away if frightened, injured or distracted. According to RuffRider, tests have shown that crates are not designed to handle impact and can explode if the weight of an animal is thrown against them during a collision.

Have you heard about anything to use to fasten your dog in a car - like a dog seatbelt?
We all read about how dangerous it is for people to drive without a seatbelt. The police enforce wearing seatbelts in a lot of places. But what about the family dog if you are not using a cage in the car necessarily. Lots of people just let the dog hop in. How can you keep it safe too? Think about it, if the car stops suddenly, it is not safe for the passengers to have a dog flying through the air either. I wonder why there is not more about this in the news. It sounds like it could be important for car safety for all.

I think all animals should be crated and seat belted in or use a device made to seat belt the animal in, but I'm not a "travel with my animals" kind of gal. I much prefer to leave them home alone or bring them to our local pet hotel if I'll be gone for an extended period.

I've seen these in action before. I believe that they fasten to the car seat belt and look similar to a harness type leash to attach to the car's seat belt.

The dog seat belt harness is a must for our pooch. He goes nuts in the car and left unrestrained would try to jump onto the driver's lap. We use the belly harness one that goes over the front legs, clips around the belly and has the belt loop off his back.. It works really well until he steps on the belt release and unclips himself !

I know they exist. The ones I've seen are usually a harness of sorts that hooks into the seatbelt in the back seat or even to the anchor for a child safety seat. Here are some examples

Yes there are many brands of dog "car seats" and harnesses are available for bigger dogs that allow you strap them up for safety using the seatbelt of your car.

You're right, it's really dangerous for both the pet and the people in the car if you're involved in an accident and everyone's not buckled in. Here's a pet seat belt...http://www.properpet.com/product/petbuckle/F13560/?ref=base
