Do you save gas driving your car in idle when going down a hill or is it better to stay in a specific gear?

I never found an answer for this question, and I'm really curious if you save more gas idling your motor or keeping it in gear when going downhill. Do you know?

Coasting is in neutral, either EOC or engine on. EOC gives you infinite mpg, engine-on gives you high (100-300) mpg.

What you are talking about is called Free-wheeling. While this practice can, in theory, save you a little gas since your car is not being feed as much gas to move doing so is ILLEGAL. Along with that fact the extra wear on the transmission quickly balances out any savings you might have on the fuel consumption.

The idea is you want to have the lowest RPMs, so neutral gives you this.

Of course, turning off the car altogether gives you the lowest RPMs, but both this and being in neutral may be illegal, depending on your state. So be careful!

It is best to put the car in the highest gear. Driving with the transmission in neutral is not safe.
