Would you buy this (picture below)?

If I owned a quiet electric car, yes. Should come standard as electric cars currently are hazardous to pedestrians.

I had never even thought of that. Have people reported accidents because of electric cars being quieter?

Mostly in cities where people walk around with headphones on.

Lol...that's hilarious. I wouldn't buy one since I already drive a somewhat noisy import, and this product isn't going to be fooling anybody. When people hear your Toyota Corolla roaring like a Lambo, they'll know that something's not quite right!

As the product implies with the "feel decades younger" bit, this product is obviously aimed at aging men in that "mid-life crisis danger zone" around their 40-50's. I think it's rather silly and would only really be to stimulate your own imagination, not to actually fool people around you. But if it brightens up someone's day, then hey, that's not a bad thing.

Nope. $45 seems a little over-priced, don't you think? If it was cheaper, people might give it as a gag gift.

I agree with Terbie - if it were cheaper, it would be a funny gag gift. But $45 is too much money to spend (waste) on something that is really only funny and serves no other purpose. I'd buy it for $10.

We now have a bill before Congress that would address one of the biggest problems with electric cars: They're too quiet. The bill before Congress would require the Transportation Department to establish safety standards for hybrids and other vehicles that make little discernible noise, including an audible alert.

This seems like it's geared to the 16 year old kid who just got his first car and wants a quick and easy way to impress girls. First off, it's over priced. Secondly, anyone who sees it isn't going to think you're cool. Third, if you're car looks so bad that you feel you need one of those to make it cooler people are going to think your car is louder because of some problem with it, and not because it's cool.

If you're buying it for safety there are better things you could buy for $45. If you're buying it for style, don't.

I went ahead and found a review of SoundRacer, and here are some things it said.

"Now you can feel decades younger, impress your fellow commuters and give your lover the thrill they seek with SoundRacer. For only $45 this FM transmitter can transform your weak-sounding ride into the snarling, growling sportscar you desire. Gently slide it in your car’s accessory power plug and listen as your car’s stereo speakers produce the sounds of hundreds of horsepower. Press the accelerator to increase the virtual RPMs and heartbeat-speeding roars. Your lover will certainly show appreciation for your virtually enlarged engine and stamina. And when the vein is right, the SoundRacer will stream Barry White from your iPod. All. Night. Long."

"Disclaimer: SoundRacer will not fool anyone who has ever actually ridden in a V8-powered car. Use at your own risk in street races, muscle car rallys and NASCAR track parking lots. SoundRacer is not responsible for any adverse situation caused by SoundRacer including severe mocking, name-calling and even ass beating. Use at your own risk of humiliation and embarrassment."

Considering that I am not the sort who is impressed whenever that fellow in the muscle car next to me at a stop light impatiently revs his engine, I wouldn't think twice about buying something silly as that little noisemaker depicted above. I'll admit that I'm someone who loves my peace and quiet, and thinks that silly how so many people are so easily freaked out by silence.

Not enough information. If it can actually key off engine RPM and similarly the pulses created by electric motors, has realistic sound, and various engine options, then I would buy one for $20 or $25. Not for my cars, but for novelty on various electric vehicles I an my kids drive (2hp minibike, go kart, EVs). I'd pay $45 if it had speaker level output so I didn't need to add my own tuner/amp.

Yes I would most certainly buy this nifty gadget , I have read the review from the link you have provided and I'm going to make an order for it through any online retailer that is stocking it. It sure will make my old Nissan bluebird sound like a souped up Ferari ,thanks for the link.
