Well, looks like you already know the answer, but here are some more sources. China Daily reported way back in 2005 and in Business Week in 2006 that Chrysler was in negotiations with building cars in China for sale in the United States. Not sure how this would help the companies image, since all they still have going for them is the fact that they are an American company.

Will large China auto companies purchase portions of GM and Chrysler to sell Chinese cars in the US?

1. Chery International wants to sell Chinese-made cars in the United States.
2. Shangai Automotive Industry Crop is a municipal owned by the Shangai government and has longstanding partnership with GM and Volkswagon. Tim Dunn of JD Power & Associates says, “SAIC and Chery probably have access to most financing and government support”. China has the capability to convert US treasuries and purchase GM and Chrysler increasing the wealth potential for China.
3. The US economy depends on the central banks of Japan, China, and other nations to invest in US treasuries to keep American interest rates down.
4. Nov 2008, the senior official of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology dropped the hint that the auto manufacturing giants in China, such as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and Dongfeng Motor Corporation have the capability and intention to buy some of the assets of GM and Chyrsler.
5. Interest peak upon the announcement that Shangai Automotive Industry Corporation may buy some of the assets from GM and Chrysler. Hints were given that China approve investment abroad. China is profitable for GM. China has over $2 trillion in reserve. Shangai GM posted a net profit of up to 3.8 yuan during Jan-Sept 2008.
6. China’s purchase of GM and Chyrsler could give a few of the large Chinese automakers a globalization presence.
7. In 2007, acquisitions in the US by foreign ventures hit $407 billion, up 93 percent from 2007, according to Thomson Financial.
