Maybe. But really the number of cylinders is not what matters. It's the number of CC's or size of the engine. You can have a 4 cylinder that uses more gas than an 8 if the cylinders on the 4 are twice as large as the one on the 8. The question becomes how much performance does one need. Do you need to go 70 miles an hour? If so your going to need a enough CC's to produce that kind of power. However, if you live primarily in town and never go over say 50. You can use a MUCH smaller engine and save loads of gas.
So what I expect to see is more people having 2 kinds of vehicles at home. One for highway driving and one for local driving.

Will four cylinder cars become more common?
Will four cylinder cars using turbo charges start replacing V6 vehicles? As gas prices begin to rise will car manufacturers move towards the four cylinder engine?
