automotive market will become more competitive within 3 years from now when probably electric cars will be mature for the market (ie the production cost is comparable with combustion cars). Indeed electric vehicles are far more "simple", much more performant, efficient and versatile, this will means that car manufacturers will concentrate on other things like security and driver assistance (gps, internet services, real time traffic information, etc.).
Much of the competition will be on strategic partnerships on innovative technologies for batteries which are the key component that nowadays has plenty of room for improvement: more capacity, less charge time, less weight, much less price.
About the second question: i don't think volt will lead the market, but will be present of course; the reason is because other big companies especially japanese, korean and european have already mature technology and strategic partnerships.
