Progressive.com compares rates with major insurance companies across the Nation. (I needed more information than what you gave... otherwise I would have looked the information up for you.)

We have found that geico has the cheapest car insurance, but we use allstate because we get renters insurance for $10.00 a month. So if your combining it with some other type of insurance, I'd go with allstate. Also, our premiums with allstate have gone down every year. Right now we pay $47 a month for liability only on a 1998 Mazda 626.

My Brother-in-law keeps two cars insured with Allstate because the insuring both cars is actually cheaper than insuring just one of them.

Best bet is to call around... even negotiate a little bit for a better deal.
Keep in mind that you can sometimes get a discount for things like:
Getting Married
Getting older
Having a good driving record
Not driving very often
Taking a safe driver's course
Getting good grades in school
And (surprisingly) having a good credit report.
Having a higher deductible
*We get a discount with allstate for having our monthly premiums automatically deducted from our checking account.

So be sure to ask about discounts!

I wish I could give you a definite answer on this, but every car insurance company looks at things slightly differently. Some look at your credit. Some don't. All will look at things like your driving record and where the car is driven and garaged. Rates will vary according to state laws and whether or not you have homeowners or renters insurance with them as well, and can vary with what kinds of safety/security devices are on the car.

With a car as old as yours, a good agent will also be able to tell you what coverages you should have and what are not really necessary. You probably won't need comprehensive, unless you still owe a great deal on it.

The two best rates I've found from reputable companies have been with Geico and State Farm. But that's with my particular variables.

Hope this is helpful.

Insurance prices are not set in stone like the price of a snickers in a vending machine. You can negotiate a price on it. Just ask.
If you can bundle your car insurance with say, another car, a home, renters insurance, maybe even life insurance, you will get a discount. I had 2 cars and apartment insurance all through my insurer the discount I got on the cars basically meant I got free apartment insurance! I don't want to tell you what company I use but they rhyme with Frate Starm.
True Story: About 2 years ago I started getting these mailers from a little company called AIG. They kept telling me I would save if I switched my vehicles to them. So I called them up. They quoted me DOUBLE what I was paying through Frate Starm! Needless to say, I didn't switch, and well... we all know what happened to AIG.
