According to Carfax.com, this VIN is not valid. Apparently they only track North American cars after 1981....so the Alfa Romeo won't qualify.

With American manufacturers, the year is indicated by the tenth digit of the VIN number. There is really no zero used tho.... Model years 1971 thru 1979 use character codes 1-9 respectively. Beginning with the model year 1980, alpha characters were used and began with A indicating model year 1980 and ended with Y indicating model year 2000. There is no Z model year designation. Beginning with model year 2010, alpha characters will begin to be used, beginning with A indicating model year 2010.

European manufacturers are not as strict at adhering to this rule of thumb tho... and there is no specific digit that represents the year.
