It is illegal to operate a vehicle on the road without at least the minimum liability insurance. While some dealers will let you off of the lot without it, and some police officers may give you some room to wiggle, the laws in most states confirm this.

You will need to contact your insurance agent and have them add the vehicle prior to you driving it on the street to be perfectly legal. It is common to not do this until later, however, when you buy a NEW car from a dealership, they require proof of insurance first.
