I haven't been stuck in traffic for the longest period of time but for percentage of a trip this has to be up there: I drove to roosevelt field mall on LI the day before christmas. I live shorter than 20mins away. I was in the mall for 5 mins and the entire trip there, back and in the mall took 5 hours.

We sat in the car for nearly 4 hours. To keep from running out of gas, we shut the car off. It was about 96 out but with humidity, no wind, and the heat of the cars around us it felt much hotter. And we had a three-year-old and a five-year-old with us. Thankfully, we'd just made a potty stop minutes before we'd gotten caught in traffic! After traffic started moving, we had to make another one right away.
We arrived at the picnic two hours late. Since most everyone there had come very early, the day before, only the host family was left. They said we'd just missed the last few cars leaving--they were surprised we hadn't passed them coming down their lane.

By the time we passed the wreck there was a melted truck on the side of the road.

What's the longest you've ever been stuck in traffic?
There are probably very few people who can beat my story: while trying to get to an outside multi-day concert that was surrounded by mud due to torrential rain, they stopped all cars from entering while they tried to cover the grounds in wood chips. I sat in a car for 32 straight hours and slept in it 2 nights in a row with 3 other people. THAT's the longest traffic jam I've ever been in.

Wow, Evan! You have me beat. I thought it was bad enough that we were headed for a family reunion/picnic that I'd helped organize. It was about 8 hours away. Only 2 hours from our goal, we got stuck in traffic where they'd shut the road down completely, on a holiday weekend. This was in Jackson, Michigan. And we'd just passed the last place where we could have gotten off when the traffic stopped.

I got stuck on the way back from Vegas to Los Angeles and it took like three or four hours to clear the road because a gas tanker had turned over and caught on fire--I kid you not. By the time we passed the wreck there was a melted truck on the side of the road.
