As a former BMW owner, I must agree with mjeezy. I owned a BMW and it cost a lot of money maintaining it once the warranty ran out. However, nothing drove better then my car, bar none.
Last month I finally replaced her. Before replacing her, I test drove all of the luxury brands, including Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, Acura, Audi, Infinity, and Volvo.
1) For those that enjoy the drive and luxury, Lexus came in first, with Volvo and Mercedes in second and third place, respectively. Lexus had a very smooth ride to the point where you couldn't feel the ground--it was almost like gliding on air. Volvo was surprisingly well constructed and also felt very stable on the road. The Mercedes, unless you go up to the S models, felt like a wide boat on the road, with a very comfortable interior. Those were the models I would call the "passenger" cars--where the best seat in the car was the passenger seat and not the driver seat.
2) For those that enjoy performance and luxury, Audi came first, followed by Infinity, Acura and BMW. Audi felt very zippy and responsive, with a very nice interior. Infinity had excellent pickup but no torque and the interior was too bright. Acura was also responsive, but was boring inside--plus the lack of options that distinguish Acura from other luxury brands was a big negative. BMW disappointed me with both the internals and the performance. However all of these cars performed much better on the road then the cars in the first category. I would call these the "driver" cars--where the best seat in the car was the driver seat.
I ended up purchasing an Audi and am very happy with my decision. I hope this helps.

I would go with the industry standard. Try a Mercedes, especially the S-Class if you want to spend the big bucks. If that's out of your price range, I have a Volvo S60 2.5 liter turbo that is just awesome.

It depends on what you want. Consumer Reports generally ranks Lexuses as the most reliable cars year after year. Other people prefer BMWs or Mercedes for their prestige. Unfortunately, these cars are normally not very reliable and cost a lot to maintain. One of my friends owns a 2007 BMW x5, and it has already broken down about 5 times. If I were to choose, I would get a Lexus.
