In all exhaust systems you are trying to minimize back-pressure and maximize exhaust flow while meeting regulatory noise limits.
The large tip allows exhaust gases to expand rapidly and dissipate rapidly while still acting as sound baffle. This dramatically reduces back-pressure while still muffling a lot of the noise.
This is identical behavior to the silencer on a gun.

What is the purpose of the large exhaust tip and gap on the Chevy/GMC Duramax diesel trucks?
I'm sure many people have seen them. The unusually shaped, and unusually long exhaust tip with a small gap where the main exhaust pipe shoots exhaust into this larger collector out the back.
I understand that it's to cool exhaust gases, but to be honest, I don't think this short piece is going to make a huge difference. If they wanted to cool the exhaust gases, why not do it further upstream in the exhaust system? Also, all of the exhaust is still going to go into the air, regardless if it's at 800 degrees or 300 degrees. Ford diesels do this too. Perhaps there's a more technical explanation as to why this is necessary.
