1. 118 MPH
2. 1995 Dodge Neon base
3. Autobahn A6, eastbound, somewhere between Saarbrucken and Kauserslautern
4. No idea, probably mid-afternoon.
5. Not that day, but did get a photo radar ticket later, in Autobahn A8.

This was back in 1995 when I was enlisted in the US Army, stationed in South-Western Germany.

The 1995 Neon had a speed governor because it shipped with really crappy tires. Once it hit 118 MPH, it would cut engine power. I even tried it downhill, and still, as soon as it hit 118MPH, it was as if the car developed asthma.

Worse, mine was the American market version. The European market Neons back then could easily reach 135 MPH.
Asker's Rating:
• Like the story. Great context. Got to love the Autobahn.

Way back in the late '70's I had a 1970 LeMans 455cid, it was late at night on a new section of expressway back in my home town, the speedo went up to 140mph and I had it pegged past that.... No ticket, did run it out of gas though and thought I had blown the engine. Couple of years prior to that was a passenger in a top of the line Mercedes on the Autobahn in Germany and my uncle had the thing up to 340kph. (approx 204mph) I guess I got my need for speed early in life. Thank God I grew out of it though, for the most part.

Speed: 155 MPH
Type of car: BMW M3 E46
Location: Not going to say, but not again!
Time of day: Day
Did you get a ticket?: No, but was lucky!

95 mph
1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass
some country road
In the middle of the night like 1am.
No ticket. No cops on some of these flat country roads.

Yeah, only 95, I'm chicken. I'm told it would have gone faster and it was a smooth ride.

In 1970 when I was 19, I did 110 in a 1958 Chevy Nomad with bald tires on Interstate 680 between Pleasanton and Danville, while racing a VW bug. Yeah, that was stupid, stupid stupid.
