What is the best "alternative" transportation? Aside from walking and taking the bus. (Details inside)

Though I'm getting to a place financially that I can afford to finance a car, I do not feel the need to get one. I'm trying to find an alternative mode of transportation that:
  • has ample storage
  • can be used for longer trips if necessary
  • does not require gas, electric may be ok

If you need more storage go for Zapino, close to $3000:

Bicycles, feet/legs (you know, walking?), horses/llamas/elephants or any animal that will carry you...which could includ a very large dog.

A bycicle will be easiest choice, If you need go farther than you can ride, you can always take with you in most public transportation systems, you cannot do that with a electric scooter, though you can ride farther and efortlessly. You asked for ample storage and you are able to afford a car, so that open other posibilities:

Although this question needs more detail for a good answer, I think from what you do say that there is no suitable alternative transportation. The best form of alternative transportation is the bicycle. I commuted by bicycle for nearly 20 years. Perhaps you should try using a bicycle as much as possible. But, a bicycle does not have ample storage space and it is not suitable for longer distances (depending upon what you mean by long, and how much time you have). There are electric scooters and electric motor assisted bicycles that can give you a longer range but you still can not handle highway distances. A tricycle or quadricycle (both of which are available in modern, adult versions) can carry more stuff; but, there is still the range problem. In fact, a big quadricycle is going to be hard to go very far in. Around town, if you live in a low crime, good weather town, there is also the option of current low speed electric cars like the Chrysler Gem. It is street legal for areas with 35mph or under limits.
